My Tips For A Comfortable Long Haul Flight

It is cheaper to fly than ever, and it seems like more and more people are taking advantage to broaden their horizons.

If you are taking a short flight it’s not a big deal and although it’s not very comfortable, it’s manageable.  As long as the person in front doesn’t feel the need to recline for a 2 hour flight…

However, if your flight is 7 – 14 hours, then it can be more stressful, especially squeezed into a tiny seat with 100s of other people.

These are my tried and tested tips for making it as comfortable as possible.

Eat healthy

Stuffing yourself with McDonalds just before your flight might seem like a good idea at the time, but having no nutrition as you travel will make you more tired, irritable and more susceptible to jetlag.

Have a salad or vegetables if you can.  Even a piece of fresh fruit is a good idea.  Also avoid alcohol.

I bring my own snacks on board when I can.  I like mixed nuts.

Exercise before and after the flight

I don’t mind getting public transport to and from the airport if I have time, as it is good exercise before and after a flight to get the blood moving.

Another option is to walk a few laps of the airport before you board, rather than just plonking yourself down at the gate if you are early.

Bring some necessities

It’s a good idea to have a travel kit for long haul flights.  Mine includes

  • good earplugs
  • inflatable travel neck pillow
  • portable power charger
  • paracetamol
  • socks
  • moisturiser
  • lip balm

Wear smart clothes

Comfort is key, so wear loose sweatpants or similar and layer a few pieces on top, in case the air temperature fluctuates.  It is also a good idea to wear a hoody to pull up when you want to sleep.

I also have a normal black thin scarf than I use as my own private shade-cloth when I must sleep.

Relax and respect your fellow flyers

Every person would love to be in “Sky Class” with a full reclining bed if they could.  But in reality, most people don’t have that budget.

I know this seems a little obvious, but really, you should treat others how you would like to be treated.

I’ve seen some parents with babies quieten the pressure-cries in a second.  There are tools and strategies now to do this. I know! I’ve seen it a few times. So do some googling if you’re bringing a baby onboard.

If you have foot odour, you CAN minimise this for fellow passengers. Keep your socks on.

I could go on…. but you get the picture.

Happy Travels!
