Overlooking LA: Sunset at the Griffith Observatory

I’m not sure why I haven’t made it to the Griffith Observatory before.  It’s a fantastic structure, in a fantastic park, with fantastic views over Los Angeles.

It’s also been in a tonne of movies.  My favourite is Bowfinger (Gotcha suckers!) and you may have noticed it in a certain LA LA Land film.

Either way, it’s worth a visit, alongside the other 5,000 people who think so too.

Sunset is a recommended time to go, so after wearing out the soles of my new Mephisto shoes in Venice this morning, I opted to view the setting sun in Griffith Park.

The drive through the suburbs to get there is a reminder just how beautiful and glamorous Los Angeles can be.

The homes are magnificent and over-indulgent.

I didn’t even mind the heavy traffic.  Only because I just entertained myself looking at the Hollywood sign.

Once at the park, the signage was pretty clear to get to the top.

But Holy Moly! It was busy.  They had even closed the car park at the top to traffic.  It was a matter of driving back down the hill with 100s of other cars trying to find a space.

I eventually found one about 20 minutes walk down the hill.

However, once you reach the observatory and the yellow light turns amber and then orange-gold, you can only just breathe in the magic.

Griffith Observatory

Yes, that’s the Hollywood sign in the distance.  There are so many walking tracks in Griffith Park.  Nature lovers could easily spend many hours here.

It’s a bit cheesy up here, but I didn’t mind today.

It is free to visit the observatory and there are open stairs at the side to access the roof.

The view is worth it.

There the sun goes…

Then it’s gone.  Goodbye another day.

Time to pop into Whole Foods for some dinner.  It’s my go-to healthy fast food in the US.

I’m a big fan of their soups and salad bar.

The best way home was to swing past the downtown.  So shiny at night!

Thanks LA for a great day.
