Getting to Know Riga – The Hub of the Baltics

Arriving in Riga was like taking a deep breath of fresh air – it felt good!  After the constantly changing and often gloomy Summer weather in Oslo, it felt like I was rediscovering Summer and in such a beautiful city that many do often hear about.

Riga was founded in 1201 and is the largest city of the Baltic states.  It has great public transport (trams/ buses) and the centre is very walkable.

The Freedom Monument

Opened in 1935, this gorgeous memorial honours the fallen Latvias who fought for independence from 1918-1920.

I also like it that the road around it is blocked off for pedestrians only.

Bastion Hill Park

As you get closer to the Old Town, there is an amazing park called Bastion Hill Park.  Best explained from LiveRiga.com..

Bastion Hill is one of the most romantic places in central Riga, as it features narrow paths, alleys of trees, stone garden, water cascade… The park right next to the Freedom Monument has been a delight to an eye and soul for more than a century. Either it’s winter or summer – special atmosphere is always here.
